An Exchange Of Gifts
November 2, 2009
Lately, I’ve been thinking of my life and the people in it as gifts. I love this poem because it shows that a poet never extinguishes her pen-not even in death:
An Exchange of Gifts
As long as you read this poem
I will be writing it.
I am writing it here and now
before your eyes,
although you can’t see me.
Perhaps you’ll dismiss this
as a verbal trick
the joke is you’re wrong;
the real trick
is your pretending
this is something
fixed and solid,
external to us both.
I tell you better:
I will keep on
writing this poem for you
even after I’m dead.

Is it egotistical of me to admit that this is one reason I write? Immortality is alluring. “As long as you read this poem/I will be writing it.” Great poem! Glad you shared.

No way! We all want to live without death-so nothing egotistical there. I hope you are doing well! Congrats on your publications…I need to check back on your blog.

I agree with poeticgrin, Doraz and you. Words can be immortal. Early on, I realized that when we read the words of those who are dead they still live.

Carolina, I love this poem. Structurally and the content, it’s just the style of poem I’m drawn to…you’re so great. I just appreciate all you do here and in the world
thanks, Darren.

@ Catherine-that is so true! I’ve always wanted to leave journals for my girls, but I am just not disciplined enough for it. @ Darren–thanks! This poem just jumped out at me–and I had to post it
